Dave’s guest on Sunday night at 8:30pm ET is Boris Said, a motor racing rare bird. To date, he is the only American to win at Nürburgring, but these days is a ringer in NASCAR. There is of course a long tradition of fabulously talented American race car drivers from the ranks of NASCAR and Indy who have competed and won on the world stage. Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, A.J. Foyt and Dan Gurney easily spring to mind. But Said has also successfully crossed the divide of motor racing disciplines and won both here and abroad. He is not an American household name, and of course his fan club ‘Said’s Heads’ is a little strange, but his motor racing talent is unquestioned.
“I was at Watkins Glen, New York and that’s when it all started,” says Said. “I looked at Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and they had all these pretty girls in their fan clubs. And I go ‘I have a bunch of 40-something guys wearing wigs chanting my name and that creeped me out.’ But if I was a race fan I would be doing the same thing.“
Said’s racing genes are impeccable. His father, Bob Said was a Formula One race driver and a US Olympic bobsled driver. The younger Said’s career has been even more impressive than his father’s and include victories in the 1997 and 1998 24 Hours at Daytona, the 1998 12 Hours of Sebring and the 2004 Rolex Sports Car Series. But perhaps his greatest triumph was being the only American on the victorious 2005 BMW M3 GTR team in the biggest, baddest, endurance race of them all: the 24 Hours at Nürburgring.
As a road course ringer, Said’s experience is unmatched, although he has managed to grab his share of NASCAR seat time on Ovals as well. He began in 1995 when he drove the No. 54 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on a part-time basis, filling in for an injured Kyle Busch. In 2015 he drives the No. 32 Ford Fusion for Go Green Racing. To date, he has run more than 50 races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, more than 28 races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, over 68 races in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and as of today, shows no signs of retiring.
