Lucas Oil’s King of the Wing race is part of a whirlwind three-race west coast weekend for the series that begins at Madera Speedway on Friday night November 20, and culminates in Bakersfield at Kern County Raceway on Sunday afternoon. Irwindale’s November 21 Saturday night show will act as the southern California “pivot point” in the high-winged, high-horsepower trifecta of races.
The King of the Wing open wheel, single-seat sprint cars are the very fastest racing machines (bar none) ever to be timed by the Irwindale timing and scoring system. Putting out close to 900 horsepower on straight methanol, these incredible race cars were so fast on their first-ever visit to the track last November that the Speedway’s sophisticated electronic system just flat refused to recognize sub-14 second lap speeds and had to be completely recalibrated before qualifying could continue!
(For the record, eventual 2014 race winner JoJo Helburg from Rohnert Park, California, turned in a jaw-dropping 130.520 mile an hour qualifying lap that shredded the track record at 13.791 scant seconds to complete a full half-mile lap on the famous progressively-banked oval!)
Drivers from all over the United States and Canada are expected for Lucas’ fall classic. In addition to California, 12 states and 2 provinces were represented on the driver’s list for last year’s inaugural, and there’s strong anticipation that the final entry will well exceed the 26 winged sprint cars that qualified to run at Irwindale in 2014.
Two additional events are also set to ratchet up the excitement on Saturday night: 1.) The Pick Your Part Southwest Tour Trucks will be staging their final 2015 race with driver Ed Cutler leading the quick pickups into Irwindale boasting 758 points on the year. And, 2.) The Western Racing Association will stage a pair of special nostalgic exhibition events on the track’s quick inner third-mile circuit for a group of classic vintage Midget Cars and Sprint Cars.
… Racing fans who’ll be heading to all three races (or any two of them) will be pleased to hear that there’s a discount deal at both Irwindale and Kern County which will net them $5.00 off the price of their GA ticket just by showing their GA ticket from the previous night’s race at the following track’s box office. Fans who were at Madera on Friday and who come down to Irwindale on Saturday night and fans from Irwindale who go up to Kern County Raceway for the races on Sunday noon will only have to show their ticket from the previous evening’s show at Irwindale to get a nice $5.00 “thank you” at the box office.
Gates at Irwindale Speedway will open to the public at 4 p.m. and the track will feature its very popular “On Track Autograph Session” at 5:45 p.m. when fans can get up close and personal with all of the drivers and their wild-winged race cars. The first race will fire off at 7p.m.
