Miss America Betty Cantrell crowned 90-year-old Betha Young, Miss New Mexico 1948, on Saturday after Miss New Mexico 2015 Marissa Livingston and the Miss New Mexico Organization, lead by Executive Director Greg Smith, discovered that she never received her crown and sash due to the effects of World War II.
“Betha was absolutely surprised and delighted to finally receive her crown and Miss New Mexico sash,” said Betty Cantrell. “It meant so much to be the one to place that crown on her head. We had a little bit of time to talk after her belated “coronation” and it was immediately evident that Betha was a perfect choice back in 1948. She still loves to share her story and I’m so proud to call her one of my Miss America sisters.”
