The ratings are in! “The 2017 Miss America Competition” (9:00-11:00 p.m. – 6.2 million and 1.3/4 in AD 18-49) was up against big NFL-fueled competition from the season premiere of NBC’s Sunday Night Football (New England-Arizona) and Fox’s NFL overrun-inflated lineup (NY Giants-Cowboys), ABC’s Sunday 9:00-11:00 p.m. telecast of “The 2017 Miss America Competition” gained 1.3 million viewers (5.6 million to 6.9 million) and 27% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/3 to 1.4/5) from its first half-hour to its final half-hour. During its final half-hour from 10:30-11:00 p.m. as Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields was crowned, “The Miss America Competition” drew 6.9 million viewers and a 1.4 rating, 5 share with young adults. ABC was the No. 1 non-sports network in the 2-hour time period with Adults 18-49 (1.3/4).
“The 2017 Miss America Competition” delivered ABC’s biggest non-sports audience in the time slot in 8 weeks and equaled a 9-week high with young adults – 7/17/16 and 7/10/16, respectively.
A note about DVR penetration: DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample is currently at 49% in U.S. TV Homes. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which are increasingly not reflected in the overnight Live + Same Day numbers. As a result, the Live + 7 Day ratings are the most accurate measure to gauge the size of the TV audience.
