Chinese esports event organiser World University Cyber Games (WUCG) recently held its 2019 esports festival in Sanya.
The grand finals of the esports festival took place across League of Legends , Dota 2, Honor of Kings, Hearthstone, and The King of Fighters XIV.

University teams from China, the United States, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain and 11 other countries participated in the event. WUCG also invited the professional League of Legends players Song “Rookie” Eui-jin and Wang “Baolan” Liu-Yi to attend the festival.
Besides organising university esports leagues, the esports festival also integrated esports with electronic music. As a famous university esports festival in China, WUCG hopes to establish a platform for global young esports fans to communicate with each other and to demonstrate the possibility of combining esports with non-endemic industries.

Xing Hua, Vice Mayor of Sanya Municipal People’s Government commented on the event: “The 2019 WUCG Sanya Esports Festival attracts numerous esports fans to visit Sanya and boost local consumption. The Sanya Government will develop this festival as a benchmark in Sanya and establish a new ecosystem in the local tourism industry by integrating it with esports elements. The government will also consider this festival as an opportunity to accelerate the construction of the international tourism island and the international consumption centre in Sanya.”
WUCG also partnered with Hainan Sanya Government to accelerate the construction of Hainan Free Trade Zone (Port) and develop the zone as a business hub for Sanya. With the launch of the cooperation between WUCG and Hainan Sanya Government, the event organiser is introducing esports resources to Sanya and helping it to promote tourism within the esports scene.
Esports Insider says: A host of esports projects are going to be launched in Hainan Province so it’s evident that Hainan is trying to integrate esports with the local developed tourism industry. It’ll be interesting to see whether Hainan can find a sustainable business model to develop esports and local tourism industry simultaneously, with the likes of WUCG at the forefront.
