The decision to expand upon the Premier Tour was announced in July last year, with Riot Games entering long-term partnerships with Freaks 4U Gaming and Lagardere Sports to produce the league.

On the lead up to the competition being replaced by Prime League, a number of partners were brought on. Tchibo, Deutsche Telekom, BARMER, NicNac’s, R+V Verischerung, and RECARO are all signed as partners of Prime League ahead of its 2020 season.

The official website explains that “no matter how high your skill level, every LoL player in the Prime League gets the chance to compete with other players under competitive conditions.”

At the time of the partnership being announced, Hans Christian Durr, Head of Esports DACH of Riot Games said the following: “League of Legends is largely responsible for the development of the esports towards the mass phenomenon. We also want to play an instrumental role in further developing the German-speaking market and have found the best possible partners for this purpose. This powerful network of three leading companies will further advance the Esports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.”

Esports Insider says: Riot Games has done a job good at setting up the structure for the European LoL esports scene and having this competition as a fully-fledged league is another solid step forwards. It’ll be interesting to see what talent comes from the DACH region – especially from within this infrastructure – in the next few years.
