3M Automotive Aftermarket Division Continues to Help Painters Save Process Time

Collision Repair Industry with New 3M™ Paint Defect Removal Hand System

New System is Easy to Use, Enables a Faster and Cleaner Paint Finishing Process

ST. PAUL, Minn. (July 24, 2015) – In spite of a technician’s best efforts through thorough preparation and proper application, a freshly painted car can still come out of the paint booth with minor defects.  To help address this challenge, 3M Automotive Aftermarket Division has a new, easy to use solution that can repair the problem without having to reach for the spray gun for re-painting.

Introducing the 3M™ Paint Defect Removal Hand System

The 3M Paint Defect Removal Hand System is a simple and easy to use system that removes defects before buffing, reduces scratches and produces an overall finer finish. Wet or dry, better results can be achieved on even the smallest and hard-to-reach jobs.  No experience is needed, thanks to an easy to learn process.

There are many advantages with this new system, including a smaller repair area, dry or wet sanding options, a color-coded system to ensure use of the proper grades of abrasive, and it all comes in a small, well-organized kit.

“Painters frequently face the challenge of dealing with minor paint imperfections after a paint job, and now we have an easier, faster and more economical solution than having to refinish the entire area or panel,” said Dale Ross, U.S. Marketing Operations Manager for 3M Automotive Aftermarket Division.  “The new 3M Paint Defect Removal System saves on labor time, materials and paint booth use, which helps auto body shops improve their KPI performance and overall profitability.”

How Does It Work?

The 3M Paint Defect Removal System utilizes a wide variety of abrasives that are color-coded for sanding grades.  The abrasives come in circular, rectangular and card shapes to easily attach to the recommended 3M accessories.  The abrasive’s anti-loading coating means less clogging and a cleaner, more efficient job.

The abrasives use pressure-sensitive adhesive to attach to the matching hand-held blocks.  The blocks feature rounded edges, and are lightweight and portable.  The blocks and abrasives work together to quickly and easily target and sand away the defect, without affecting a large area.  This system requires no experience to use and master.

To remove dirt nibs and to also level excess surface texture over large or small areas, the following fine grades of 3M abrasives are used: 1000, 1500 or 2000.  To reduce compounding time, refine any scratch that may still remain after completing Step 1 using 3M abrasive 2500 or 3M abrasive 3000.

Less is More

The easy to learn process means less down time, enabling more labor profit.  It also enables cleaner repairs, with less dust and compounds, resulting in a cleaner shop and better results.  Less space is needed for equipment, leaving more area for cars.  Less product is used throughout the process, which is easier for technicians and better for the bottom line.  And, a faster process means more work completed in less time.
