Opened a little over a year after Irwindale’s well-known 1/2-mile NASCAR oval debuted in 1999, the facility’s 1/8th-mile NHRA Street Legal track has seen thousands upon thousands of drivers in cars, light trucks, and motorcycles make timed runs against the clocks. Those runs are in all vehicles which have been professionally checked for safety and that compete under physical conditions that are safe for the drivers as well as for the many fans who attend each week to enjoy the events and atmosphere.
Irwindale Event Center has been on record from day one as condemning illegal street racing of any kind anywhere. Since its opening, the management and staff of Irwindale’s drag strip facility have worked hard on a regular weekly basis to provide a friendly and safe alternative the dangerous, too often deadly, and illegal practice.
Presently, Irwindale is the only 1/8th-mile, NHRA-sanctioned drag strip in all of Los Angeles County. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that more places for this sort of safe, controlled motor activities to take place are very needed in the southland. Irwindale Dragstrip has the ongoing support and counsel of local and regional law enforcement, organizations like the NHRA, SEMA, the Auto Club of Southern California, and many members of the media … Another facility like it would be given the same such support.
In light of the recent fatalities caused by illegal street racing, this letter is meant to very strongly encourage any and all interested civic authorities, service clubs, law enforcement agencies, private corporations, and interested individuals to visit Irwindale Dragstrip to observe and understand exactly what it takes to site, build, and successfully operate an
NHRA Street Legal 1/8th-mile drag strip.
For Irwindale Event Center’s part, our management team is poised and ready to consult directly with any entity, public or commercial, with regard to any aspect of the design, construction, and operation of such a facility. We sincerely believe that attending a drag racing event should a safe experience for everyone involved: drivers, crews and spectators.
