World’s largest Bluetooth Smart semiconductor manufacturer partners with Gooee – a ‘turning point’ for future $57bn smart lighting industry

(31/03/2016) – Gooee, the smart lighting ecosystem provider, has partnered with Nordic Semiconductor, the world’s largest Bluetooth® Smart semiconductor chip manufacturer, to become the first to integrate Bluetooth Smart Mesh networking into its lighting and sensing platform.

With the global smart lighting market estimated to reach almost $57 billion by 2020†, the announcement is described as “a turning point for the lighting industry,” and one that “supports why lighting manufacturers should join the IoT revolution,” according to Gooee CTO Simon Coombes.

“To harness the full potential of the IoT you need a wireless protocol that’s both widely integrated in a multitude of devices as well as an efficient mesh-networking capability,” he explains. “By partnering with Nordic Semiconductor, we will be one of the first to adopt the Bluetooth Smart Mesh, enabling sensing and control data to be reliably and wirelessly communicated within an extended network, and decisions taken with that data that can bring new levels of management and control.”

The Bluetooth Mesh Networking framework will help to deliver up to 90% energy savings* and transform the way consumers engage with retailers, offices and almost every commercial environment. The ubiquity of lighting makes it easier to harness the IoT for any business looking to embrace its benefits.

Alf Helge Omre, Business Development Manager Bluetooth Smart, for Nordic Semiconductor, says that its ultra low power Bluetooth Smart wireless technology is playing a key role in helping businesses to realize the IoT: “This development signifies the importance and relevance of Bluetooth Smart within the lighting sector and represents a leading-edge example of the IoT that is here today and available to install now.”

Gooee’s award-winning, wireless IoT lighting platform brings enterprise scalability, installation flexibility and enhanced communications by increasing productivity and profitability, lowering operating costs, and enabling new business models to be created. It also enhances operational efficiencies, as well as ultimately transforming the customer experience in ways that have been previously impossible ‘pre-IoT.’

Jan Kemeling, Gooee CCO, says the best way to help customers transform their businesses with the IoT is to provide the services and platforms that cover the entire technology value chain, from devices and connectivity to platforms and applications: “This way, lighting organisations have the tools and resources to focus their attention on innovation, rather than face many of the challenges that can arise from building IoT solutions for the first time.”

The Bluetooth Smart Mesh stack, along with the other components of Gooee’s ecosystem, will enable light fixtures to communicate. This provides significant corporate benefits including centralized control, enhanced energy management and increased consumer interaction through the use of beacons – all fully integrated into an enterprise cloud platform. Other benefits include the ability to detect occupancy levels and create personalized user experiences in sectors including retail and healthcare.

Gooee is creating a new ‘standard’ in sensing, data and control for the LED lighting industry, and is already a key partner to a growing number of luminaire manufacturers. The working partnership with Nordic Semiconductor follows the commercial partnership with EVRYTHNG’s IoT cloud platform, enabling Gooee to operate tens of millions of intelligent light endpoints in a global network. It also follows an exclusive agreement with DELTA Microelectronics to integrate its new ‘Artificial Eye’ technology into Gooee’s ASIC with multiple environmental, human and LED sensing capabilities.

“Through continued development and testing, we are actively working on innovative functionality that will change the whole technology landscape of lighting control and energy management,” Simon continues. “By integrating into Gooee’s ecosystem, lighting manufacturers will not only be able to accelerate their product development into intelligent lighting, but also offer a service-driven value proposition to their customer base. Our partnership with Nordic Semiconductor is an essential part of making this happen.”

Simon Coombes concluded: “Working alongside other leading international technology providers and integrating the latest technology into our platform guarantees LED lighting manufacturers an enterprise scale, interoperable, full stack IoT solution.”

About Nordic Semiconductor

Nordic Semiconductor pioneered the development of ultra low power wireless during the early 2000s, and later becoming a key contributor in the creation and evolution of the ultra low power Bluetooth Smart wireless standard. Since then Nordic has worked to continually define and re-define the leading edge of the ultra low power wireless market with each successive new product generation launch culminating in its latest nRF52 Series launched last year that redefines what’s possible on a Bluetooth Smart single chip.
